There are two different ways of updating maps. The first is to actually download a whole new map, which would have to be purchased. You do get one free map download, within the first 30 days, with the latest map guarantee.

The updates you will get for a year are mapshare map corrections. Now mapshare is totally free for any unit, but the map will stop getting updated when it is a year old. With mapshare, you will get corrections for your map that have been reported by other users, but missing streets won’t be added to your map.
