To get what kind of portable GPS system?

My husband wants a GPS system for his car for Christmas. I know nothing about these things. I seen the Tom Tom's, and Garmin, but I'm not sure what they are looking for. He just wants something basic, nothing too fancy with a host of features. But not the cheapest not. Any suggestions? Thank you!
