Is the Garmin Nuvi GPS really is not a monthly fee?

I thought that all GPS systems was a monthly fee. But from what I hear, Sign up this system is $ 300 with no monthly. Is it true? I want to buy it if so. I would rather pay more for something forward and not to for another monthly bill to pay. Thank you!

Really, really, honest! I've lost in a paper bag! So for my B'Day lined them all in and gave me a Garmin c340. I love it, use it often, and she talks to you! It comes with preloaded maps, U.S. or Euro, and has options for display, Voice and much more. It's worth the $. Have fun and good trip.
