iPhone 3g Queries?

i’m considering of buying the new iPhone 3g on PAY AS YOU GO but i’m self-conscious about costs (not the price of handset).
Is safari free?
What applications require purchases?
Can i make the most of the technology in the iPhone such as GPS, email and internet without having to pay?
Is the iPhone able to hold msn messenger (lol) ?

Well, i didnt know that you could do pay as you go, but i have the “old” iphone, and this is how it works:
Each month, 20$ is charged on top of my regular bill that covers unlimited internet and email. For the 3G, the cost is, i think, 30$.
There are tons of free apps, and even more that cost money. The free ones are pretty cool though. You can check them out at apple.com, or on iTunes.
You have to pay to use the internet and email.
Idk if MSN works, but i know Yahoo has a way of doing it, and AIM has a free APP.
