Would a refurbished handheld GPS?

I came across an online store that offers refurbished Garmin GPS handheld at a much lower price. Does anyone know what would be the quality of the GPS. I know that some refurbished electronics are better than the new ones. I'm happy for the GPS for my friend for Christmas, and I would hate to get one that looks good, does not work. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
